Elbow Lake Township was organized April 3, 1877 and named for the lake by it which was shaped like an arm. Early settlers were J.N. Sanford, H.P. Hansen, Tiedeman H. Burtness, Erick Norgaard, Andrew Norgaard, Anders O. Pikop, Christopher Mobraaten, Lars Mohagen, H.I. Haugen, Andrew Olson, Erick Olson, Knut Syverson and Christopher Torgerson.
